Akagera National Park
Situated in the north east of Rwanda along the border with Tanzania the park takes its name from the Akagera River which flows along one of its boundaries. It is a park of breathtaking natural beauty with vast plains, rolling highlands, fresh water lakes, papyrus swamps and an exceptionally high level of bio-diversity for a park of its size. Since 2010, a partnership with African Parks has seen Akagera return to its former glories and in 2015, after a 15-year absence lions were reintroduced. This has been a great success and in 2016 seven cubs were born. The rare Black Rhino were also introduced in 2017 making the park a Big-5 reserve.
As the only savannah protected area in Rwanda, Akagera National Park is the last remaining refuge for savannah-adapted species and over 12,000 large mammals are found within its 1,122 square meters. Notable game that can be seen whilst on safari in Akagera include elephant, lion, leopard, giraffe, Hippos as well as naturally occurring large plains game, such as buffalo, topi, zebra, defassa waterbuck, roan antelope and the eland. Akagera National Park is also the largest protected wetland in central Africa and an ornithological paradise for bird-lovers! Visitors to the park could spot rarities such as the shoebill stork, the papyrus gonolek and the swamp flycatcher as well as over 500 species of other birds.
