Kataara Women's Handicraft Centre promotes sustainable livelihood in the community through empowerment projects and environmental conservation initiatives; it aims to provide work and income for women living in and around Queen Elizabeth National Park as well as supporting wildlife conservation. In two small rooms and a covered yard, there exists an enterprise which turns elephant dung into textured paper which is then made into beautiful notepads and other paper products. It is simple and brilliant as it provides work and income for the women and ensures local farmers no longer shoot the elephants that leave 'gifts' in their fields as they too generate an income by supplying the dung to the project.

The small onsite gift shop is full of many lovely woven gifts, jewellery and of course the paper products; it is a perfect place to pick up authentic, one-off gifts to take home with you.
